Keeping Your Diet in Check While Traveling

Traveling has always been the downfall to my normal fitness routine. I don’t know what it is, but some part of me always wants to go balls to the wall on vacation and eat everything in sight “because it’s vacation, so I can.”

It obviously tastes good in the moment, but always leaves me feeling sluggish, bloated and lacking confidence during and after the trip. Plus then I come home and feel like I have to play catch-up for weeks just to get back to where I was before.

I will say that it’s waaaay easier for me to keep my diet and workouts in check when I’m traveling for work vs. traveling for pleasure…probably because when I’m on vacation I’m with family/friends and don’t have as much control. That being said, keeping to my normal routine while traveling for work the past few weeks gave me the confidence I need to continue this pattern throughout the holiday travels!

Here are my top tips:

  1. Staple restaurants that provide nutritional info and customization options are the best! My go-tos are Panera Bread, Subway and Chipotle. These places allow you to completely customize your meal to fit your macros for the day.
  2. You don’t have to clean your plate. Restaurant portions are HUGE, so if you order something that may not be as nutritious, don’t feel like you have to eat it all.
  3. Stick to your normal foods when you can and don’t use being out of town as an excuse to eat things you normally wouldn’t. For example, if you normally have a yogurt and apple for snack, don’t reach for the cookie and chips “just because.”
